Detainees in Ofer and Jelboa prisons are exposed to additional restrictions and retaliatory punishments

January 23, 2024

🔺The Israeli authorities escalated its assault and torture against Palestinian detainees since the beginning of war and Genocide in Gaza Strip, which are represented in isolating detainees from the outside world, cutting off communications and preventing family and lawyers visits.

* case in point:

🔺Detainee Majd Sharabati was arrested after breaking into his house by the Israeli soldiers, where they blindfolded and handcuffed him and transferred him to an interrogation center , beating him severely along the way. He is now held in section 11 in Ofer prison.

🔺With regard to punitive measures against detainees in Ofer prison, they are exposed to deliberate medical ignorance and deprived of their medication. In addition, the IPS intended to create an overcrowded environment in prison where they hold a high number of detainees in the same room, which forced some of them to sleep on the floor. Moreover, detainees are provided with poor quality and quantity of food and they are prevented from getting to the prison’s courtyard.

🔺Detainee Tamer Alhaj, 29, from Nablus was also subjected to retaliatory measures, as he was kept handcuffed all the time during interrogation. His lawyer asked the officer to untie the cuffs because it is an illegal procedure but he refused. He is currently held at Jelboa Prison.

Stabilization of health conditions for both injured detainees Abu Sfaira and Jayousi

January 24, 2024

The Commission of Detainees’ Affairs reported this evening that the health condition of the injured detainees , Fayez Abu Sfaira and Amir Jayousi from Tulkarm, has stabilized, but they still need continuous treatment and medical care to overcome the effects of gunshot injuries caused by the occupation forces, as they invaded the city, the camp, and several towns in the governorate a few days ago.

The Commission stated that the injured detainee Abu Sfaira is currently in Mayer Hospital in the so-called Kfar Saba area. He was injured in his under-construction house in the town of Thennaba, feeling sudden pain in his back and abdomen. He was found to be shot in the back, with the bullet getting out from the abdomen. He asked for help from the Israeli soldiers, but instead, they arrested him. He was taken to the hospital, underwent surgery, and is currently held under strict guard, facing fabricated charges of helping a wanted person and possessing a weapon, despite finding nothing with him.

As for the the detainee Jayousi, he is being held in Al-Afula Hospital. While on the roof of his house in the Kettaba area, documenting the army's invasion and its crimes against innocent civilians. During that, he was shot in the abdomen from the right side. He underwent a surgery, and fabricated charges of weapon possession and military activity were imposed on him.

The Commission holds the Israeli occupation government and its prison administration fully responsible for their lives. It calls for serious attention to their cases, providing treatments and medications by specialized doctors, and refraining from transferring them to prisons in their current stable and challenging conditions.

The Commission urges international health, human rights, and humanitarian institutions to break their silence that make them accused of the ignorance towards male and female detainees, and inaction with the government of the occupation.

The Israeli forces use excessive force and assault against Palestinians throughout detention campaigns and investigation

 January 18, 2024

 The Commission of Detainees’ Affairs stated that the Israeli forces tend to use excessive force, beating and torturing against Palestinian citizens during arrest and detention on a daily basis, constituting a shameful attitude to international and humanitarian organizations which are not able to provide protection to them.

 In this context, the commission’s lawyer had documented the conditions of arrest to the detainee Baraa Khalil , where he was arrested from his home at 6:00 am after breaking into his home and attacking him with severe beating. He was transferred to a military camp and then to Ofer prison, as he was subjected to beating that caused many bruises on his body.

 Another case in point is detainee Safwan Abu Snainah, where the commission confirmed that he was exposed to severe beating at Itzion detention and interrogation center while being handcuffed and blindfolded, in addition to attacking other 20 detainees in the same way.

 With regard to detainee Mutasem Shawamrah, he also was subjected to intense beat and assaulted after breaking into his house and taking him to Ofer prison. He was transferred in 15/1/2024 to the Shin Bet security service to be interrogated and there he was attacked by Nahshon Special Force, causing him an injury in the head.
