Ongoing war of starvation and isolation against female detainees in Israeli prisons

June 30, 2024

The policy of abuse and punishments against female detainees is not needed, but it increased in its intensity since October 7, 2023. They have been completely isolated from the outside world, and deprived of their simplest rights such as clothes and medical care in spite of the seriousness of health conditions for those who have chronic diseases.

Furthermore, they are subjected to physical abuse and suppression since the beginning of their arrest, in addition to sexual harassment during strip search and other threats.

The attorney of the Commission of Detainees’ Affairs confirmed, following a visit to Damoun prison, that the IPS intends to crack down on female detainees as summer approaches with soaring temperatures, the rooms are closed with no ventilation and fans were confiscated. Moreover, rooms are overcrowded where each room accommodate 10 detainees and jailers intend to close the narrow window of the room’s door to prevent air from entering.

There are currently (78) female detainees held in Damoun prison, including three detainees from Gaza Strip ( Asma Shatat, Siham Abu Salem and her daughter Suzan), two pregnant detainees (Jihad Nakhlah and Aysha Ghidan) in addition to seven detainees under interrogation.
